Patient Registration

In the UK since 2004, all patients are registered with a practice and not an individual doctor.

Therefore, at Stannary Surgery, we no longer have named doctors for each patient. That does not mean we do not recognise the doctor-patient relationship, which for many is very important. You are entitled still to choose which doctor you would prefer to see, and we recognise that this preference may change over time or from problem to problem.

Please be aware that we (the doctors) all need to attend courses and meetings; and particularly in the present political climate, work on developing the practice… and take leave. The result is you may not always be able to see the doctor of your choice if you wish to be seen within a few weeks. If you do not specify a named doctor you will be able to see another soobner; and if you feel you need to see a doctor today, the duty doctor will always be able to speak to you to discuss the most appropriate way to deal with your problem.

We trust you will be able to understand this change, which is not a decision taken in isolation but one laid down in statute. The change reflects the trend towards Primary Care Teams of healthcare specialists - a response to ever increasing medical capabilities and patient expectations which no General Practitioner, even if present 24 hours a day 7 days a week, could effectively and safely manage alone.

Practice Development

During 2009/2010, the surgery will undergo major refurbishment. Planning permission has been granted for a significant extension which will result in a building of 1000 square metres (currently around 300). This will give us considerably more scope to bring in the extra services we have mentioned in previous correspondence (additional GP services, on site pharmacy, other community health services).

We shall keep you abreast of developments as they arise by way of updates to the website; through our regular quarterly newsletter and via notices in the waiting room.

There will be disruptions to our normal service, of course, especially with parking. We aim to keep the build time to a minimum to reduce the impact on all, but apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may be encountered. It will be short term only and for the longer term benefit!
